"youth myth"

There was Yasujiro Ozu, there was Kenji Mizoguchi, there was Mikio Naruse. Furthermore, even Akira Kurosawa. In the past, Japanese movies lived an incredibly happy era when they released new works around the world at the same time. This is a special feature screening that makes us realize that it was such the golden age of the Taiwanese film world from the late 1980s to the early 1990s.

The fight between Hou Hsiao Hsien and Edward Yang produced fertility beyond the time when Godard and Truffaut were working hard. It was in 1992 that Tsai Ming Liang started collaboration in "youth myth" with Lee Kang sheng, which continues for 20 years thereafter. In the previous year, Yang completed the "A Brighter Summer Day ", and Hsiao Hsien completed "A City of Sadness" in the year before that. These two are the monumental in the film history rather than theirs. This achievement is equivalent to "Tokyo Tale" of Ozu and "Ugetsu Monogatari" of Mizoguchi in 1953, as well as Kurosawa’s "Seven Samurai" in 1953 and Naruse’s "Drifting Clouds" in 1955. It can be said that "Wedding Banquet" released by Anne Lee in 1993 had predicted the upcoming age of LGBT. The film had been repainted in Taiwan for only about 5 years.

"The Sandwich Man"

It was the two omnibuses, "Guang Yin De Gu Shi" and "The Sandwich Man" that became the origin. These were 1982-83 works that were also a new director’s showcase at the time. Yang participated in the former, and Hsiao Hsien and Wang Len participated in the latter. Actor Niu Chen-Zer, who starred in Hsiao Hsien’s work “The Boys from Fengkuei " in 1983, later became a film director. and had a break in "Monga" in 2010. A movie is not born unexpectedly; it is also a plurality of interlaces of traces of how people lived a certain period. We will know that extraordinary filmmakers can make their works by having a casual movie climate like Taiwan that accepts them.
