Starting from ”And Then” released on June 9, Hong Sang-Soo will be released four times in a row. Hon Sang-soo's works have strong fans. On the other hand, he has been pointed out that "every time the same way". However, with this work group Hong Sang-soo has changed, or has not changed.
Perhaps some movie fans think this commentary is sad. It’s because he throws away some elements that we thought as “Hong Sang-Soo"-like. He doesn’t become naked. This is not a dangerous movie. His unique sense goes to a different place, where his original talent is demonstrated. It is not naked Hong Sang-Soo but sober. The drunken person had a charming face, but he is not drunk anymore. It is neither he stopped or suspended drinking. He still drinks. But he is not drunk. His sober face just reminds us of his seriousness in another dimension, with terror.
One man and three women. One couple, with a mistress and the other one has no entanglement of affection. Three pairs consisting of only four people are spelled only on a certain day ”And Then.”
Simplicity is alive and is refined further. However, the funniness that comes from the structuralism point of view will no longer drift into its handling dealing with people's anxiety. Slicing the lives, it's not vivid but soft and sharp. Speaking of sashimi, knives are used not to hurt the fibers of the fish. It is not a happy story. It is not unhappy either. However, the audience will not get weak or go hanging. That would be a soft landing, no matter how we desire or not. There is a reverberation that is neither too deep nor too shallow.
The man is indeed impolite and miserable. He still goes hither and thither with foolish pride, and he cannot reach anywhere as ever. But what monochrome screen has the first touch should not be the first time. Hong Sang-soo doesn’t laugh at other people's world anymore. He is gazing with his sober face.
